Stepping up to H2Geneous, participants add their image to the community of faces by aligning their own face with that of H2Geneous. As each face is captured it is fragmented and de-constructed into component parts; all of which are added to the rich diversity of faces representing the community.
These continuously evolving images are set atop a background of faces of the community and the resultant work is presented as a large-screen projection.
The surprising, whimsical, beautiful, and unique faces created by H2Geneous will haunt, entertain and inspire you to give thought to the face of your community.
H2Geneous was a custom installation for the exhibition, "FACE It Head ON" at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts in association with Workman Art.
H2Geneous was part of an official Independent Project for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010 in Toronto Canada.
h2Geneous installation was projected into the gallery window, enabling Nuit Blanche visitors to participate in the creation of a collaborative group portrait. The work was designed as a digital media based happening; in which the faces of Propeller artists, Workman Arts artists, along with portraits of consenting visitors were intertwined into a live digital video projection creating a compelling representation of the community.
During the evening visitors were invited to step into a “photo booth” where video capture technology was used to capture an image of the visitor's face.
As the evening progressed the system continually added pictures to a library of portraits in real time.
These images were combined with images of the participating artists and projected on a screen placed in the window of the gallery, visible from the street. The composite non-literal community portrait morphed over time and with each new participant.
